Different marketplaces, sales channels and goods typologies (for example, finished goods and spare parts) influence the different ways of transportation in companies (road, sea, air, intermodal transport) and the type of service (express deliveries, bulk tanks, boxes and pallets in groupage, special and dedicated transport, …).

To avoid assignment errors and so prevent the explosion in transport costs, there should be a clear transport policy, which then has to be shared within the organization (shipping department, warehouse, purchasing department, sales department) effectively.

So it's necessary to find a person responsible for the preparation of it, for the check of the clarity and for the sharing with the other parts of the organisation.

But then who will be responsible for the control of the observation/correct application and of the periodic revision (if necessary)? Also for this aspects it may need to define a person/role/reference office, who/which is eventually facilitated by appropriate services and / or supporting tools.

The audit of transport policy respect and correct implementation is part of the freight audit activities range.
