Freight: how to organize an effective tender
Companies focus on rationalising and monitoring of direct costs (mainly manpower and raw materials), without considering that indirect costs affect on average between 10 and 20% on turnover, depending on the industry considered. The logistic costs influence almost half of the total (40-50%) of indirect costs.
Select the best supplier for the performance of the freight transport activities is essential for shipments with an appropriate level of service at the right price. The choice of a provider compared to another can not be based only on a tariff comparison; it must take into account other factors, for example the identification of objectives to achieve.
We should first consider internal company aspects, including:
- Type of carried product and unit cargo;
- Geograpy and route;
- Abundance of point of withdrawal/delivery;
- Service level necessary/desired (direct/subcontract…);
- Performance.
Other factors are external, concern the market:
- Type of service necessary/required (courier, groupage, …);
- Way of transport (by road, air, sea, intermodal…);
- Reliability of providers on a specific service;
- Financial soundness of carriers;
- Regular activity (permissions, contributions…);
- Type of available assurance.
This applies not only to outbound transport, but also to inbound ones, when these are borne by purchaser.
Without adequate industry-specific knowledge and a meticulous and critical study of the choice, create an effective freight tender is often difficult. It is therefore necessary to implement a consolidated approach to obtain concrete results.
How to make a successful freight tender and choose the "right" transport supplier?
